When I was asked to give a title to my exhibition I was stumped. It is such an eclectic offering and I don’t do ‘themes’. On reflection I realised that every one of the pictures is drawn from my own life: people and animals I have known and loved; places I have lived; and activities I have enjoyed and shared throughout my life, all leading up to ‘Star Hill’.

Roey

Czardas
(oil; 355x510mm)
The violinist is the father of my good friend, Jeanette Jamieson. During WWII his music helped him to escape from occupied Poland to join the Free Polish Army in Britain. It’s a great story. You’ll have to ask Jeanette...

The Blues

(oil; 330x380mm)
Jim in a pensive mood.

Guitar al Fresco
(oil; 370x440mm)
After years as a professional book illustrator I found it difficult not to ‘draw’ with my brush. To break myself of the habit, I painted this picture as an experiment, using only a knife - no brushwork at all. It did the trick.

Picture
Grace in the Afternoon
(acrylic; 930x930mm)
This is my lovely grey mare, Grace. Sadly I lost her last November but I’d like to think she still haunts that slope, gazing out over the Kilcoy hills.

Lorikeet in a Coral Tree
(oil; 310x310mm)
The lorikeets love feasting on the seed pods of our batwing coral tree.

Wallaby Dawn
(oil; 310x310mm)
We often see wallabies drifting through the morning mist on our lawn. It’s one of the rewards of rising early

Picture
Pale-headed Rosellas
(oil; 310x310mm)
I photographed this pair in the bare branches of a liquidambar in our garden with winter hills behind.

Picture
Sky Riders
(oil; 1000x1000mm)
I spent quite a long time on this wedge-tail, counting feathers and trying to get all the details right, but there was still something missing. Three brush strokes and the work of a moment fixed it. Spot the second eagle.

Naomi (oil; 420x500mm)
When my friend Wendy visited us in Scottsdale I took the opportunity of having her pose for a couple of paintings. This one came out looking rather Biblical, so I called her ‘Naomi’.

These two little pastels were done in Yowie Park, Kilcoy.

RF24: Winter Evening, Mt. Kilcoy
(pastel; 470x400mm)
Another pastel painting. The evening was as cold as it looks. I was happy to do this one from inside the dining-room window. This is our view north, with Mt. Kilcoy on our left and the Conondale Ranges in the distance.
